Q: Is it important I see my dentist during my pregnancy?

Women who are pregnant should be monitored closely by their dental team. This is even more important if you have been diagnosed with Periodontal Disease (gum disease). Oral microbes (bacteria) that cause gum disease can cross the placenta and expose the fetus to infection. This exposure to oral pathogens is associated with pre-term birth. It is important to see your dentist regularly and possibly more frequently during your pregnancy.
